Congress corporator Manoj Mhatre shot dead in Bhiwandi

The murder was caught on the security cameras that were placed in the parking lot of his residence. Blood stains were seen on Mhatre's white shirt as he was first shot and then brutally beaten up by the assailants. He was taken to Jupiter hospital for treatment. A manhunt has also been launched to nab the perpetrators with nakabandis across the city. However, the doctors declared him brought dead. The reason behind the killing is yet to ascertained by the police.

Mhatre's gruesome murder comes just months before the crucial local body polls of the Bhiwandi Muncipal Corporation.

The police, however, are yet to recover the gun and the sword used in the crime. The 53-year-old leader of the Congress party of Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation was attacked with sharp weapons before he was shot at point blank range at around 9 pm. When he got out of the vehicle in front of his residence in Oswalwadi, the unidentified assailants brutally attacked him.

DCP Patil had earlier stated that Mhatre was the resident of Kalwa of Bhiwandi taluka, but shifted to Oswal Wadi in Thane due to personal enmity. "The men came in a auto, attacked Mhatre with choppers, opened fire at him and drove away", said inspector Vijay Bhise.
