Philip Pullman to publish 'equel' trilogy to His Dark Materials

Pullman has said that The Book of Dust will work as a stand-alone story.

The BBC have reported that Pullman has already written the second book in the trilogy and is now working on the third.

Phillip Pullman is set to release a follow-up series of books to his bestselling series, His Dark Materials.

It centred on Lyra Belacqua, a young girl living in a parallel universe who goes to the Arctic in search of her missing friend, Roger Parslow, and her imprisoned uncle, Lord Asriel, who has been conducting experiments with a mysterious substance known as "dust".

The author has described the story as neither a sequel or prequel, but an "equel".

The author of the acclaimed young-adult fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials has announced a new three-book companion series collectively titled The Book of Dust, with the first volume to be published October 19 in the US and United Kingdom.

"It's an "equel". It's a different story which begins roughly 10 years before His Dark Materials and ends roughly 10 years after". Events involving her open the first chapter, and will close the last. "Little by little through that story the idea of what Dust was became clearer and clearer, but I always wanted to return to it and discover more".

"Also, of course, there are some characters who are new to us, including an ordinary boy (a boy we have seen in an earlier part of Lyra's story, if we were paying attention) who, with Lyra, is caught up in a terrifying adventure that takes him into a new world". This volume and the next will cover two parts of Lyra's life: starting at the beginning of her story and returning to her 20 years later.

Unlike Harry Potter, His Dark Materials did not experience a successful transition to the screen. The report in The Guardian states that the series will include "characters familiar to existing readers, as well as other Pullman creations, including alethiometers (a clock-like truth-telling device), daemons (animals that are physical manifestations of the human spirit) and the Magisterium, the Church-like totalitarian authority that rules Lyra's world".

The first book, due out this fall, will be a prequel to the original trilogy, which comprised of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. Despite that, this is a long-overdue treat for fans of His Dark Materials.
