The accused were sentenced in connection to the murder of a Maruti Suzuki manager, killed following violence and rioting in Maruti's Manesar plant in 2012.

Plants to go on strike include Maruti's plants in Gurgaon and Manesar; Maruti Suzuki's powertrain unit in Manesar, Suzuki Motorcycles unit in Manesar; and auto component firms Belsonica Auto and FMI Auto.

Gurgaon: Thirteen workers convicted of murder during the labour unrest at Maruti's Manesar plant in 2012 were sentenced to life imprisonment by a city court on Saturday after a trial that lasted almost five years. He added that, therefore, it was decided by the six workers' unions to put tools down for an hour from 9 10 p.m.

Additional district and session judge RP Goyal granted life sentence to the 13 men, who had been convicted for murder by it earlier. Of the 18 others who were convicted of rioting but not murder, four were sent to prison for five years. Fourteen more will be fined and released, the Hindustan Times reported.

On March 10, the court had convicted 31 employees of the factory, including 13 of murder, in connection with the case; and had acquitted 117 of the 148 employees named in the charge sheet in the case for want of evidence.

The court also sentenced four other accused to five years' imprisonment, and said the sentence already served by the remaining 14 accused was sufficient.

The case dates back to August 2012, when senior manager Awanish Kumar Dev died and several others were injured in a fire that broke out at the plant during a clash between workers and the management.
