Music superstars saddened by death of 'giant for the ages' Chuck Berry

Police in the St. Louis area, where Berry was born and lived most of his life, said that first responders found the guitar legend unresponsive when they answered an emergency call at his home.

Chuck Berry was rock's greatest practitioner, guitarist, and the greatest pure rock "n" roll writer who ever lived.

Long before Bob Dylan led a serious- and literary-minded counter-culture, Berry declared that the music he was making mattered, and that his young fans, sneered at as greasy juvenile delinquents, counted, too.

The likes of The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr and Tom Petty among others.

"Thank God I was body-slammed by this new music and heard my calling loud and clear", Nugent continued. The revolutionary pioneer of rock "n" roll music was 90 years old.

Already 30 when he recorded his first hit for Chess Records, "Maybelline", in 1955, he took an assessing, outsider's look at the nascent teenage landscape, and became its first, sympathetic poet laureate.

In the first Back to the Future film, Marty performed "Johnny B. Goode" at the Enchanted Under the Sea dance, because those darn kids wanted to dance and Michael J. Fox had already spent weeks learning how to play the song note-for-note.

U.S. rocker Bruce Springsteen said: "Chuck Berry was rock's greatest practitioner, guitarist, and the greatest pure rock "n" roll writer who ever lived". Together with her students, Julie Bernette, then reached out to the Rock and Roll legend with a Christmas card.

"He showed up with his son and two other guys, a bass player and a drummer", Scherer said.

"If you tried to give rock "n" roll another name", John Lennon once said, "you might call it "Chuck Berry". "He's the one who invented rock "n" roll". Johnson sued Berry in 2000 for song royalties, saying they were equal collaborators on numerous hits, but the case was dismissed on grounds that the statute of limitations had expired.

In a statement as he announced the album, Berry dedicated it to his wife of 68 years, Themetta Berry.

Some of Berry's classics, covered by hundreds of artists over the decades, include Johnny B Goode and Roll Over Beethoven. While only in high school Berry started playing the blues.

Lenny Kravitz said: "Hail Hail Chuck Berry!".

He wrote on Twitter that the 90-year-old was "probably the most important musical influence in my life".
