Sheriff's deputy shot and killed Saturday night in Baton Rouge

An East Baton Rouge deputy has died after he was shot late Saturday night, East Baton Rouge and Louisiana State Police officials confirmed.

Authorities did not release the identities of either the deputy killed or the suspect.

Authorities said the deputy was investigating a domestic situation at a store-front near the theater when he was shot.

Hicks said Louisiana State Police would be conducting the investigation into the shooting.

"Our hearts and prayers are with the family and friends of the fallen deputy and all the courageous men and women in law enforcement who risk their own safety every single day to protect the communities they serve", said Corey Amundson, acting US attorney. Our thoughts, our prayers, our condolences go out to the Sheriff's deputy's family and all of our law enforcement agents who certainly feel a brotherhood and a sisterhood when something like this takes place.

Family gathered at the hospital and other East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputies stood at attention, saluting the deputy as his body was taken away from the medical center a few hours after the shooting. The deputy sustained life-threatening injuries.

The shooting occurred near the Classic Cuts barber shop off O'Neal Lane, according to Louisiana State Police spokesman Bryan Lee. The slain cop and suspected gunman were not immediately identified. "That suspect is being treated at an area hospital at this time".
