Yogi Adityanath chosen as Uttar Pradesh CM

Yogi Adityanath chosen as Uttar Pradesh CM

Adityanath said he would follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi's slogan "sab ka saath, sab ka vikas" (With all and development of all) and ensure all round development of the state. Meanwhile, who would become the next chief minister of Uttar Pradesh is still not confirmed. "Denial of CM post to Maurya will be injustice to OBCs", he said.

Naidu said even after the proposal was made, he asked the 312 newly elected MLAs if they wanted to propose anybody else for the post, but they all backed Adityanath unanimously. The yogi's supporters remained on tenterhooks.

After days of intense speculation on who will be declared the next UP CM, the BJP picked Yogi Adityanath for the top job in Lucknow on Saturday.

By the time Adityanath boarded a charted plane bound for the national capital, the rumour mills had already begun running overtime.

Opposition MPs criticised the appointment, but BJP ministers defended it.

Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma will be the deputy chief ministers of the state.

The BJP won a landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh last week with the biggest majority there since 1980.

Manoj Sinha, the Union Minister of State for Communications (Independent Charge) and Railways, may be considered as the runner-up to Yogi Adityanath.

In all certainties, Yogi Adityanath, a five-time MP, can't be termed as an overnight sensation in Uttar Pradesh politics.

Though the former Chief Minister of the state was initially hesitant to go back to state politics, but is now ready to follow the party leadership's decision. His aide, Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, contested the polls on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket and defeated BJP candidate Shiv Pratap Shukla. The MP is also the founder of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, a right-wing group with significant popularity. For this, they needed a strong Hindutva icon and therefore zeroed in on Adityanath.

While the BJP MP has largely focused on Hindutva, one can not overlook his contributions to the development cause either. He comes from a backward community.
