Geoff Hurst: England captain's role is a job for one man only

JERMAIN DEFOE has targeted next year's World Cup - and admits he may have to leave Sunderland the be on the plane to Russian Federation.

However with Sunderland bottom of the league, despite Defoe's goal-scoring feats, he conceded that it may be hard for him to retain his place if he is no longer in the top-flight.

Defoe has scored 14 times in 28 league appearances for Sunderland this season, but David Moyes's side are now rock bottom of the Premier League table, seven points from safety.

Defoe is one of just three specialist strikers - with Leicester's Jamie Vardy and Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford - in Southgate's party for the Germany match and Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley.

The call up will boost Defoe's ambitious hopes of making it to the 2018 World Cup, should England qualify. To get into any squad you have to be there on merit, it's as simple as that.

'I'd say I probably need to be in the Premier League but we'll see what happens'.

"The boys I'm competing against are playing in the Premier League and playing in Europe and probably that's why I missed out on the last World Cup".

But Defoe has looked as sharp as ever this term, netting 14 Premier League goals, and has revealed he never gave up hope of earning an worldwide recall.

Defoe has scored 19 times in 55 caps for England, but has not represented his national team since 2013.

"Somebody's got to have it. Gareth Southgate's talking about a number of captains, I certainly don't agree with saying we should be changing captains, I don't agree with that at all".

"Playing in the major tournaments, going out and emulating the players you've seen on TV".

"I never gave up".

'I was getting a lot of stick from the lads at the training ground because I've still got the England flag on my boots, ' Defoe said.

"If I do get an opportunity to go to a major tournament, it will be a dream".

"Everyone knows how much I love playing football and scoring goals".

"It's positive that if you're doing well as a young player, you'll get a chance".

"To be lucky enough to have experienced it you just want it more and more".
