Gopher men's hockey secures No. 1 seed at the Northeast Regional

Cornell will play UMass-Lowell in the other regional semifinal game, with the winners meeting Sunday in the regional final.

The Gophers earned the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Regional of the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship. The Gophers will play Notre Dame in a first round game Saturday at 2:30 PM and the victor will advance to play the victor of UMass-Lowell and Cornell on Sunday for a trip to the NCAA Frozen Four. The Pioneers advanced to the Frozen Four in 2016.

The Irish are 7-6-2 against the NCAA Tournament field, including games against Minnesota Duluth (1-1-0), Penn State (0-1-1), UMass-Lowell (1-2-0), Michigan Tech (1-1-0), Providence (3-0-1) and Boston University (1-1-0).

The University of Denver was the No. 1 overall seed.

Of the 16 teams, 6 conference champions will receive automatic qualification with the remaining best 10 teams being selected on an at-large basis. A total of 4 teams will be seeded with each of the seeded teams being placed at 1 regional site. The victor of that game plays the victor of the Irish-Gophers game.

The Gophers will make their 37th NCAA tournament appearance, most of any team in history.

The Gophers are 27-15-3 all-time against Notre Dame. Minnesota is led by head coach Don Lucia, a 1981 Notre Dame graduate and former Irish defenseman.

The Midwest and East regionals will begin on Friday with Regional Finals on Saturday, while the West and Northeast regionals will begin on Saturday with the Regional Finals on Sunday.
