West Ham manager Slaven Bilic echoed Shakespeare's appraisal of Schmeichel, adamant his side would have got something from the match had the Dane not been quite so impressive.

Riyad Mahrez, Robert Huth and Jamie Vardy - three of the main protagonists of last season's title triumph - hit first-half goals as Leicester showed no signs of a European hangover following their impressive win over Sevilla. Within minutes of this decision, Leicester had again extended their lead when Vardy scored from close range, after a corner was not cleared by the Hammers inept defence.

Mahrez scored the first in the fifth minute, although his curling effort from the right was nearly certainly a cross intended for either Shinji Okazaki or Vardy, who had given him the ball.

West Ham were guilty of gifting Leicester two early goals, as their poor defending allowed the visitors to take the early initiative.

"We had positive things, but when you don't win you see them".

But there was no doubt about the second two minutes later.

Lanzini put a smile straight back on West Ham faces, however, with a perfectly placed free-kick a minute later to make it 2-1.

Two minutes later, from a Leicester free-kick, Marc Albrighton clipped the ball into the box with the outside of his boot and the unmarked Huth nodded in the second.

"I think it is one where we set our stall out in terms of pressing teams high but I think the goals were paramount in giving us foothold in the game".

They pulled one back a few moments later, though, Lanzini finding the top-left corner from an exquisite 20-yard free-kick.

"We have to give West Ham credit", Leicester boss Shakespeare told BBC Sport.

On 63 minutes the home side's constant pressure at last paid off when Ayew headed in after Carroll had won the ball at the back post.

"I haven't banned talk of the Champions League but after the game the focus, what I wanted, has been on West Ham".

"That was very important, they were pivotal saves", added Shakespeare.

"In the second half, we played really well", the Croatian stated. West Ham now sit in 12 position in the Premier League on 33 points, while Leicester have three points less and are in 15 place.
