Penelope Cruz Will Play Donatella Versace in 'American Crime Story' Season 3

Versace: American Crime Story will also premiere next year, after Katrina, and will dramatize the murder of famed fashion designer Gianni Versace (played by Edgar Ramirez) by serial killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss). In her USA television debut, Cruz will star opposite previously casted stars Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss as designer Gianni Versace and serial killer Andrew Cunana, respectively. With the anthology series' third iteration centering on the Versace fashion empire in the wake of the 1997 Miami Beach murder of founder Gianni Versace, Cruz will play the role of younger sister Donatella Versace, who subsequently became the face of the global fashion house.

The Versace-focused American Crime Story season will center around the 1997 death of Gianna Versace, who was shot on the doorstep of his Miami home.

What do you think of FX's decision to cast Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace in the third season of its hit series?

This will mark Cruz's first regular television series acting gig. It was initially rumored that Lady Gaga, who appeared in the last season of American Horror Story, might be a shoe-in for Donatella.

In 2009, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, along with a BAFTA, an NYFCC and an NBR Award. It will follow the second installment of the series, called Katrina, which will chronicle the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, also set to debut next year. The screenplay will be based on the book "Vulgar Favors" by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth.

"The People v. O.J. Simpson", the first installment, became one of the most acclaimed programs of 2016. Tom Rob Smith, who most recently wrote the BBC show London Spy, will write several episodes and serve as a co-producer.
