Uber's No. 2 executive quits after 6 months

SAN FRANCISCO Ride services company Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] has been thrust deeper into turmoil with the departure of company president Jeff Jones, a marketing expert hired to help bolster its reputation.

That very constituency reacted angrily Sunday, upset not so much by Jones' news but at what some of them see as Uber's second-class treatment of its global army of drivers.

The sources added Jones' decision was not impacted by Kalanick's decision earlier this year to search for a new chief operating officer.

"We want to thank Jeff for his six months at the company and wish him all the best", the statement said.

Uber has already lost several big executives in recent weeks.

Uber confirmed Jones' departure in a statement.

Jones is the latest to quit the company after a string of high profile exits including that of Amit Singhal who was asked to resign because of a sexual harassment allegation against hime in his previous job at Alphabet Inc's Google. At the beginning of the year, people viewed that Uber was taking advantage of a major protest amid Donald Trump's immigration ban.

In January, critics of the company began a #DeleteUber campaign after Uber turned off surge pricing at New York City airports. As a result, Kalanick ordered an investigation, led by former Attorney General Eric Holder.

"Over the last six months, Ryan and I have become increasingly convinced that our rapidly growing marketing efforts needed to be far more integrated with our city operations", Kalanick wrote in a post announcing Jones' hire.

According to Forbes magazine, Uber's lofty value gives Kalanick a personal net worth of $6.3 billion.

Last month, Waymo, the name of Google's 7-year-old self driving auto division, sued Uber, alleging that Otto's sensor technology was stolen by former Google employee Anthony Levandowski shortly before Levandowski left to found Otto.
