Victor Valdes slips to gift Manchester United third goal

Although Boro saw plenty of the ball they didn't threaten United and looked low on confidence.

Jose Mourinho's side were holding on to a 2-1 lead against Middlesbrough when Antonio Valencia scored a fortuitous third goal for the visitors in injury time.

And Mourinho has praised United's efforts in "a very hard week" for the Manchester club.

The Smoggies, still without a league win since prior to Christmas, did step things up slightly after falling behind but they were unable to create any real openings in the remainder of the first half.

But their progress might be too slow to fight off the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Spurs for a top four finish. The Manchester club is gifted with two possible entries into Europe next season, and Mourinho and his men must take advantage of that opportunity.

Manchester United: De Gea 7; Jones 7, Smalling 5, Bailly 5; Valencia 7, Fellaini 7, Carrick 6, Young 7; Mata 6, Rashford 7, Lingard 8. Man United is still showing a lot of promise and they are capable of winning more silver wear.

With United now just three points outside the top four and into the quarter-finals of the Europa League, Mourinho is delighted to have more than one route to a Champions League return available.

The win continues United's impressive run of form in the league. I prefer Europa League. Chelsea is ten points ahead second place Tottenham, and they keep demonstrating every week there is no stopping them. I prefer to win the Europa League because the Europa League gives us the same, gives us Champions League football, but gives us a trophy, gives us prestige, gives us a European Super Cup.

The Belgian worldwide midfielder had scored his previous league goal in a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in December 2015, but had few problems in ending that barren run with his third goal of the season.

Those matches have also put a smile back on his face and mean Depay has no regrets about having swapped Old Trafford, the "Theatre of Dreams", for Parc OL where he hopes to make his own dreams come true.
