At least 20 Persons Die in Ghana's Kintampo Waterfalls Accident

Police said the victims of the freak accident had been swimming during a storm when the tree fell and crashed into the revellers.

The broadcaster said rescue teams used chainsaws to cut through the fallen tree and free those trapped underneath.

A tree from the top of the waterfalls fell onto the sightseers who were swimming.

Speaking also, the country's fire service spokesman Prince Billy Anaglate said a storm caused trees to fall in the "unusual incident" on Sunday.

The incident is the most catastrophic domestic tourism accident in Ghana in the last few years.

Ghana's tourism minister Catherine Abelema Afeku said in a statement: "We extend our condolences to the families of the dead and pray for the injured".

Some of the injured tourists are receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The Kintampo Waterfalls, which was referred to as Sanders Falls during the colonial days, is considered to be the highest falls in Ghana.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described as "unfortunate" the accident.

Fourteen students from Wenchi Methodist Senior High School in Ghana are among the 18 people killed, Boampong added.

The Vice President-led delegation later visited the Kintampo Hospital where Dr. Bawumia donated an undisclosed amount of money to the University of Energy and Natural Resources students on admission.
