Dukhi India drops to 122 on World Happiness Index

The AP explains how the rankings are based on different socioeconomic factors, such as health and income, and the surveys allow people to rank their happiness on a scale of 1 to 10. Ireland, the United States, Germany, Belgium, and the Luxembourg also occupy high positions, all above the UK.

The top countries were Western, developed countries - with Australia placing ninth.

Central African Republic, Burundi, Tanzania, Syria and Rwanda stood at the bottom of the list.

The Scandinavian nation, which was ranked fourth in last year's report, jumped to the top this year on the basis of several key calculations for measuring social happiness, among them levels of caring, freedom to make life decisions, generosity, good governance, honesty, health and income. Ukraine also appears among them, emerging as the odd one out - something that can be easily explained by their ongoing conflict with Russian Federation due to the occupation of Crimea.

Sachs suggests that in order for America's happiness to be restored, the country must place more focus on improving the social capital, rather than the economy.

The latest report, the fifth overall since the United Nations launched the program in 2012, lists Norway as the world's happiest country.

"In sum, the United States offers a vivid portrait of a country that is looking for happiness 'in all the wrong places.' The country is mired in a roiling social crisis that is getting worse".

"For many years, Norway has been behind Denmark in this ranking", she wrote on Facebook.

Studying happiness may seem frivolous, but serious academics have always been calling for more testing about people's emotional well-being, especially in the United States.

China ranked 79th in the study of 155 countries.

At the same time, America's GDP and life expectancy, the other two happiness factors according to the report's model, are rising.

The report, published by the U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network, shows that while economic variables matter, factors such as healthy years of life expectancy, freedom, social support, trust and generosity do, too. "Economists report that better access to infrastructure and public goods increases happiness among black South Africans, while determinants of the happiness among mainly wealthier white South Africans mirrors those typically found in Western developed research settings". Since 2012, many governments and governmental organizations have made well-being or happiness a priority. Sachs said the USA had dropped one place due to rising inequality, distrust and corruption. Or, to offset what Americans see as a loss of social support since 2006, GDP would have to rise to $82,000.
