Gaudreau, Monahan lift Flames over Kings 5-2

Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk has been suspended for two games after his elbowing of Drew Doughty last night against the Kings.

"I think any time you're mentioned in the same sentence as a guy like Mike Vernon, it's an accomplishment", said Elliott, who has gone 15-1-1 dating to January 26.

The Kings got goals from Dustin Brown and Nic Dowd.

The 19-year-old rookie has made an immediate impact on the Flames' roster this season, scoring 13 goals and assisting on 33 others in his first 68 National Hockey League games. With time to perform any number of evasive or defensive manoeuvres, Tkachuk instead takes his bottom hand off of his stick and throws an elbow into Doughty in a way that can not be considered inadvertent, reflexive or defensive. "To be a rookie and play like that is a little surprising".

Only a few minutes later, Quick made a nice play to stop a shot from the slot by Monahan. Doughty didn't have possession of the puck when Tkachuk raised his elbow into Doughty's face.

Giordano put the Flames back up by a pair 47 seconds into the second period before Gaudreau converted on breakaway chance 50 seconds later by lifting a backhand shot over Bishop's left pad.

In 68 games, Tkachuk has 13 goals and 46 points, tied for fifth among National Hockey League rookies.

With the win in goal, Brian Elliott ties Mike Vernon's team record of 11 straight wins.

Michael Ferland didn't make the trip to Washington meaning we could see Curtis Lazar, Freddie Hamilton, or both slotted into the lineup for the Flames next tomorrow or both games.

Kings: Travel to Edmonton for a game Monday night.

Tkachuk will sit out Tuesday's game against the Capitals and Thursday's game against the Predators.
