Omri Casspi Close To Deal With Timberwolves; Celtics Interested

Minnesota inked swingman Omri Casspi to a free-agent deal running through the remainder of the season, the team announced Monday. Casspi accompanied DeMarcus Cousins from Sacramento to New Orleans in the blockbuster trade just before the deadline.

The Wolves had to make some type of move to replace Nemanja Bjelica, whose season recently ended thanks to a foot injury.

But Casspi returned from the injury ahead of schedule.

ESPN reported that Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau "made a personal recruiting pitch to Omri Casspi over dinner in New Orleans", and that the Israeli star is expected to fly to Minneapolis with the team on Sunday night after their game in New Orleans.

The Timberwolves have added another shooting threat.

Now in his eighth National Basketball Association season, Casspi has averaged 6.1 points and four rebounds in 22 games this season, while shooting 46 percent from the field and 39.4 percent from 3-point range.

The forward, a 36.9 percent shooter from beyond the arc in his career, will provide spacing and another perimeter threat for the Wolves, which in turn should give Karl-Anthony Towns a relief valve as defenses collapse around him. Casspi has also spent time with Cleveland and Houston.
