Overland Park father finds home in flames after CityPlace fire spreads

Overland Park firefighters are battling a blaze that consumed a four-story apartment complex under construction and quickly spread to neighboring homes.

Every fire department in Johnson County came to help fight the 8-plus-alarm fire, Rhodes said, and crews from Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas, and Lawrence also came to the scene.

Firefighters responded to the apartment fire at around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

"It's a bit of a war zone here", said Jason Rhodes, public information officer for the Overland Park Fire Department.

Several fire departments were called in to help Overland Park crews.

There are no reports of injuries.

The Kansas City Star reports the blaze Monday at a building at the multimillion-dollar City Place development blew plumes of smoke and embers along rows of homes nearby. Embers spread from the big fire, setting area homes on fire.

Asked whether the fire brought up concerns regarding large apartment developments, Rhodes said newer apartment construction must be outfitted with automatic sprinklers and other fire suppression elements required by code, and this building was still very much an open structure, with windows still uninstalled. Our thoughts and concerns remain with those who are directly impacted by this event.
