Senators to Public: Meet Judge Gorsuch

Now a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in Denver, Gorsuch has ruled in several cases touching on the rights of people with disabilities, a judicial record that many advocacy groups say is worrisome.

"It is with my highest recommendation that I support Judge Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the United States Supreme Court", Elway wrote on official Broncos letterhead.

Justices do not pass judgement on the people before them, Gorsuch said, but on the law. He pledged to be independent or "hang up the robe".

It is unfortunate that Judge Gorsuch will not receive thorough oversight and questioning from Sen.

Flake's opening statements were complimentary of the nominee. In a letter to Democratic senators, groups including, the Working Families Party and NARAL Pro-Choice America accused Democrats of failing "to demonstrate a strong, unified resistance" to Gorsuch. Most Democrats are intent on digging in their heels to oppose Gorsuch, both on ideological grounds and in retaliation against Republicans' refusal to hold hearings on Merrick Garland, Obama's nominee past year to replace Scalia.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin said that the court under Chief Justice John Roberts is often called "a corporate court", and said a study by the left-leaning Constitutional Accountability Center found that it ruled for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce 69 percent of the time. "I'm deeply disappointed that it's under these circumstances that we begin our hearings". But also, the Democrats haven't exactly made much of a fuss about him.

"We have chosen Judge Neil Gorsuch, a man of incredible skill, and deep devotion to the law", Trump said last month during an address to a joint session of Congress. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii said to Gorsuch in her opening statement. Grassley opened the hearing with a statement where he talked about the U.S. Constitution, saying its most important feature is the separation of powers. "He's going to keep you busy". Chairman Charles Grassley (R - Iowa) anticipates that the Committee will vote on whether to move Judge Gorsuch's nomination to the Floor on April 3 if not sooner.

"He interrupted our class discussion to ask students how many of us knew women who used their companies for maternity benefits, who used their companies to - in order to have a baby and then leave right away", Sisk said. He has been favorably reviewed by multiple Senate Democrats, including Feinstein herself, her more pointed remarks on Monday notwithstanding.

Said Graham: "I don't feel like any injustice has been done to anybody here".

"It isn't enough to do it in the privacy of my office or our colleagues behind our closed doors".

Several of the more liberal Senate Democrats have already announced plans to oppose Judge Gorsuch and seek to block his nomination from coming to a final vote. But Republicans could respond to a Democratic delay by eliminating the 60-vote filibuster threshold now in place for Supreme Court nominations, and with it any Democratic leverage to influence the next Supreme Court fight.

With his conservative credentials, the appeals court judge from Colorado is a heavy favourite to win confirmation to a lifetime seat on the nation's highest court, given the Republicans' control in the Senate.
