RBS To Close Further 158 Branches Amid Digital Banking Shift

The bank closure comes along with 6 other branches across the their North Staffordshire region. Ulster Bank will add mobile banks in rural areas and the Irish postal service will manage cash and checks for personal and business customers, CEO Gerry Mallon said in a statement.

The Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Stowmarket branches of NatWest are to close, with the bank blaming a sharp reduction in the number of transactions.

"As customers change the way they bank with us, we must change the way we serve them", says a spokesperson for RBS, which remains majority-owned by the United Kingdom government following a multi-billion bailout nearly a decade ago.

The Stowmarket branch is to close on September 21, the Felixstowe branch on September 27 and the Woodbridge branch on September 28.

Some 30 branches are to be wound up as part of 158 closures across the United Kingdom and 176 full-time posts in Scotland will be affected.

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is closing 30 of its own branches and 128 of its subsidiary, NatWest, putting 470 people out of work.

"While the branch will still be a core part of our offering to customers, inevitably some branches will have to close".

"Simple transactions" undertaken at the NatWest and RBS branches have fallen by 43% since 2010, the bank says.

As part of the changes the bank is creating a total of 50 new "community banker" will be created to serve the local area - mostly in rural parts of the United Kingdom - aiming to help customers who can not reach branches.

But the Unite trade union said surveys show most people value their local branches.

"I'm very disappointed that the RBS has chose to close its branch in the High Street", he said.

The nearest branch for NatWest customers in Tadcaster will now be more than nine miles away in Wetherby and for Knaresborough Natwest customers it will be Harrogate.

A spokesperson said: "We are following the Access to Banking protocol and we have made the decision after careful consideration of a wide range of factors, including regular branch usage and the alternative ways our customers can bank with us".

It will also offer specialist technical help to support customers with "digital skills" until the branches close.
