Massive fire erupts at Shanghai's Hongkou Football Stadium, no injuries reported

Flames and thick black smoke billowed from the inferno at their 33,000-capacity Hongkou Football Stadium on Tuesday morning, with enough damage caused to suggest the club may have to relocate for their next home fixture.

"The blaze broke out at the Hongkou Stadium early Tuesday and was extinguished by mid-morning". However, the police have revealed that they suspect the blaze may have started in the stadium's indoor rock climbing facilities.

Tevez, 33, is now the world's highest paid footballer after joining Shenhua on a record-breaking deal from Boca Juniors in January, for £615,000-a-week.

NAIJ.com recalls Shanghai Shenhua is the home stadium of Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins, former Juventus and Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez, former Chelsea striker Demba Ba and former Inter Milan midfielder Freddy Guarin.

Knocked out of the AFC Champions League by Brisbane Roar last month the fire at Hongkou Football Stadium has just added to the misery of the club's fans. As for the Shenhua emblem, it's best to burn it into ashes.

The Chinese Super League season is two games old, with Shanghai Shenhua sitting fourth having taken four points from their opening two games.
