Nadal advances to start bid for 1st Key Biscayne

Nadal has reached the final in Miami four times but has yet to win the tournament.

Rafael Nadal has marked his 1,000th match on the ATP Tour with a hard-fought victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Miami Open third round.

In women's play, No. 6-seeded Garbine Muguruza rallied past No. 30 Zhang Shuai 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands eliminated No. 17 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, and No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska was upset 6-0, 6-3 by No. 26 Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. "I think I had a good week of practice, so I need to play good in the competition now to try and have success".

Nadal's trademark booming forehand succeeded in pushing Sela out of position, prompting a series of mistakes from the world number 83 as he fought hard to match the brute strength on show across the net.

Nadal said that there was little he could do against Kohlschreiber's outstanding play in the opening set.

"I remember the first match very well because it was at home in Mallorca".

A healthy Raonic (ranked No. 5 in the world) appeared to pose one of the largest challenges for No. 7 Nadal in reaching the late stages of the tournament. "I resisted well the first few games of the second, and then I think I played a great second and third set", he said.

Afterwards the Spanish fifth seed said: "One thousand matches is a lot of matches". Raonic advanced to play American Jared Donaldson, a 6-4 6-4 victor against 28th seed Mischa Zverev of Germany.

While Nadal was the heavy favourite against his German opponent on Sunday, it was Kohlschreiber who started on the front foot, attacking the Spaniard on his serve from the off. Nadal became the eleventh player in ATP tournament history to achieve the 1,000 match milestone in his career. "I was close enough four times in my career. I will try to give myself another chance".

Croatian wild card Tomljanovic led 13th seed Vesnina 5-3 in the third set on Thursday when a thunderstorm halted play and returned on Friday to finish the job, sealing the victory on her third match point to move into the third round.

"Yeah, 2020 here I come", she said. No. 1 Angelique Kerber played until almost 1 a.m.to beat Duan Ying-Ying 7-6 (3), 6-2.

"Like I said at the end of the match, I felt like my level was continuing to rise, which is exactly what I want", Williams said.

Romanian third seed Simona Halep was pushed to three sets by 19-year-old Japanese player Naomi Osaka before advancing 6-4 2-6 6-3.
