Hurricanes G Lack diagnosed with neck strain

In a 4-3 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings at PNC Arena, goalie Eddie Lack suffered a serious injury on the game-winning goal and had to be stretchered off the ice.

By my unofficial count, the Red Wings had five breakaways last night, including the game-winner.

Lack was injured on Andreas Athanasiou's overtime victor as the Red Wings forward crashed into the Hurricanes goaltender.

An official review determined that the puck was in the net before Athanasiou made contact with Lack. Lack was taken off the ice 10 minutes later and gave a thumbs up when he left the ice. Detroit won 4-3. Lack was injured on the play.

The Red Wings' incredible streak of making the playoffs 25 consecutive seasons could be over as soon as this evening. Skinner, on the other hand, could have curled back towards his own net in the neutral zone (as one would expect from a team driven by puck-possession) while he waited for his team's line change to finish instead of trying to go through three defensemen.

It's hard to not feel bad for Carolina Hurricanes goalie Eddie Lack who has had a history of issues with concussions.

"Our guys are playing hard and that's a credit for the character of this group", coach Jeff Blashill said. I just tried to put the puck in the net. The Hurricanes nearly lost the game in regulation but Justin Faulk tied the game with 50 seconds left. "I don't know if there is any magic formula or special trick to get your mind ready and you're good to go". Tomas Tatar leads Detroit with 21 goals, Henrik Zetterberg has 45 assists and Andreas Athanasiou has 109 shots on goal.

"It's a great point - to get a point out of that is huge".

Detroit (31-32-12) improved to 5-1-1 in its last seven with the victory. "We need to learn from the way we played today to get better tomorrow". Detroit C Darren Helm was back after missing four games with a leg injury. The Detroit Red Wings have allowed three or less goals in each of their last six games.
