Instant analysis of Eagles signing DE Chris Long

Long played the first eight years of his National Football League career with the then St. Louis Rams before playing for the Patriots last year.

First, the team announced a two-year deal with defensive end Chris Long.

Long spent the first eight years of his career with the then-St.

Notes: Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was scheduled to speak to the media at the NFL Owner's Meetings in Scottsdale, Arizona Tuesday night.

He had four sacks and 10 quarterback hits in 16 games for New England and was an integral part of a defense that allowed an NFL-low 250 points. He appeared in all 16 regular season games previous year for the Pats, starting six.

Philadelphia sports blog Crossing Broad speculated the signing of Long less than an hour before the team made the official announcement. After years of losing, going 33-80-1 and failing to every appear in the playoffs, Long signed a one-year deal worth $2 million to play in New England.

By securing depth at wide receiver and pass rusher through free agency the Eagles will likely turn their focus towards either cornerback or running back when they host the NFL Draft next month.

Injuries slowed him down his last two years with the Rams, who released him after the 2015 season.

"I think that our conversations with Chris have been about we have young players at that position", Roseman said.

In 2016, Long actually played 65 percent of the Patriots' snaps during the regular season, but those numbers dwindled until he played just 15 snaps in the Super Bowl win. The Eagles had counted on Curry starting previous year after signing him to a big contract, but he could not beat out Barwin.
