The official said miscreants had engaged the cops by pelting stones on them in the same area.

A policeman was killed and 11 other security personnel injured in a grenade attack here on Sunday evening, police said.

A police party was attacked near a police station in Nowhatta in downtown Srinagar when cops were returning from duty today around 7 pm. "One policeman was killed", said Imtiyaz Ismael Parray, a senior police officer in Srinagar.

The attack has come on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state to inaugurate the Nashri-Chenani tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The injured were immediately rushed to hospital where Ahmad succumbed to his injuries.

The militants had indiscriminately fired on the army vehicle, part of the convoy, injuring three soldiers. The area had little traffic movement due to shutdown called by separatists.
