Garcia ends major drought, Stricker closes strong

He also praised Garcia's great performance developed in the first four rounds of the competition and said that the golfer had written a golden chapter in one of the major championships in men's professional golf.

The European Ryder Cup teammates produced a memorable final-round tussle on Sunday, where Garcia prevailed at the first sudden death play-off hole to claim a maiden Green Jacket.

Real's Gareth Bale is also a good friend of Garcia.

By the time Garcia started to lose his grip on the green jacket, as expected - coupled with Justin Rose mixing in some birdies of his own - much of the zip was gone from the early hours of CBS' broadcast.

"I knew what I was capable of doing and I believed I could do it", Garcia said.

However, he finally delivered by rolling home a birdie putt on the first playoff hole.

The BBC trotted out almost the same excuse then as it did this week: "Peter made a lighthearted comment which was inappropriate and we apologise if anyone was offended".

And he is no longer remembered as one of the "best players to have never won a major".

Garcia, who has been plagued by self doubt when it came to majors, once said he did not have what it takes to be a major champion but demonstrated on Sunday during an enthralling rollercoaster battle with Rose that he does indeed possess the tools, demeanor and determination of a champion.

The fact that it came on what would have been his idol, Ballesteros' 60th birthday makes it all the more special for Garcia.

On the 13th, Garcia went left into an azalea bush, had to take a penalty shot to get out and hit his third shot 89 yards short of the green. We were cheering each other on. I still have a bunch of good years in me and this is one I hope I can knock off.

The Irishman stood between Garcia and a Major title in the 2007 Open Championship, where Garcia missed a ten-foot putt for victory, and the 2008 US PGA Championship, where the Spaniard again surrendered a lead to Harrington.

"I thought I had it on 18", Garcia said. "You deserve it all amigo", from second-ranked Rory McIlroy and "Congrats, well earned", from 14-time major victor Tiger Woods.

Rose, meanwhile, had to settle for a par on No. 13, missing a 6-footer for birdie.

What do you think of the Garcia's big win?

"But I knew that I could still work it around, you know, if I just accepted what was happening".

"I'm sure he helped a little bit with some of those shots or some of those putts", Garcia said.

Stricker made eagle on the par-5 second and had birdies on holes 4, 12, 15 and 17.
