Sabres clean house with firings of GM Tim Murray, coach Dan Bylsma

Buffalo Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula dropped the hammer on Thursday, firing both head coach Dan Bylsma and general manager Tim Murray.

"After reviewing the past season and looking at the future of our organization, (wife) Kim and I have chose to relieve general manager Tim Murray and head coach Dan Bylsma of their duties", team owner Terry Pegula said in a statement Thursday morning.

The decision to dismiss Bylsma came amid reports of discontent between the coach and star player Jack Eichel. The former No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft has one year remaining on his entry-level contract.

This is the sixth-straight season the Sabres have not made the playoffs. They've finished last or next-to-last in their division in each of the last five seasons.

Bylsma, 46, spent the past two seasons behind the bench and finished his tenure in Buffalo with a 68-73-23 record.

"I just want everybody to know that top to bottom in the organization, we understand that it was a very disappointing season", Murray who had been the Sabres' GM for the past four seasons, told reporters last week.

Murray's rebuilding plan took a step back this season.

Murray, who met with Pegula on Wednesday, has been Buffalo's general manager since January 2014. He also owns the NFL's Buffalo Bills, who in December fired head coach Rex Ryan two years into a five-year deal.
