Canada refutes United States claims of unfair dairy trade

He told The Canadian Press that despite some US rhetoric and his rebuttal letter sent to USA officials on Tuesday, he still expects "constructive discussions" between the two countries.

Dairy farmers in New Brunswick and the rest of the country are rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump's claims the Canadian dairy industry is to blame for setbacks experienced by dairy farmers south of the border, particularly in NY and Wisconsin.

On Wednesday, Australia and New Zealand dairy industry leaders said they would support any moves by Washington to draw the World Trade Organization into a trade dispute with Canada. "Farmers in Wisconsin and NY state are being put out of business".

But MacNaughton said there is too much at stake to let anything interfere with trade between the two countries. "This is not an area where we can afford to become dependent on foreign countries".

Standing up for dairy farmers in Wisconsin "demands fair trade with all of our trading partners", Trump said, "and that includes Canada".

The Hendersons face a significant debt associated with quota and also significant debt for the purchase of farm equipment, he added.

"What the U.S.is saying is "Oh, you should be giving us access" - at the same time as (it's) saying 'Oh, we want to not give other people access in other markets, '" he said.
