Manchester United defeat Chelsea to throw open title race

Manchester United has blown the Premier League title race wide open with a convincing 2-0 victory over league leaders Chelsea on Monday morning AEST.

The Manchester United manager said his side's 2-0 win over his old club Chelsea was, of course, "special".

Rashford opened the scoring at Old Trafford after being played in by man-of-the-match Ander Herrera, who scored United's second goal as manager Jose Mourinho enjoyed a victory over his former club.

Manchester United winger Ashley Young has admitted he is not sure whether or not he will by playing for the Red Devils next season.

The result extended United's unbeaten run in the league to 22 matches and moved them up to fifth in the table, four points behind Manchester City with a game in hand.

Herrera was deployed by Mourinho to man-mark Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard and did a sterling job throughout.

"To play this type of game from now and until the end we must have great enthusiasm, great motivation to try to reach the target".

He said: "We went there earlier in the season in the cup and we had a gameplan".

The France global has completed 90 minutes just three times in the Premier League this season, and Mourinho has now warned Martial that he must adapt if he is to thrive.

Tottenham now trail them by four points with six games to go and have the superior goal difference.

"One is the Europa League and the second is finish in the top four because I think playing in the Champions League is a very good objective for next season".

"There have been high standards here since I signed for the club and we want to be pushing on", Young, a Premier League victor four years ago, said.

"I can not give up on the Premier League yet - we have to try".

The Spain global also contributed by doubling United's advantage with a deflected strike just four minutes after half-time.

"That's the main focus for me and then we'll see what happens".

But Chelsea does have a more favourable run-in than Tottenham.

United left Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench following the Europa League draw at Anderlecht while Chelsea were without keeper Thibaut Courtois, who had an ankle injury, and Marcos Alonso, who had felt unwell in the warmup.

The win was huge for United as it keeps them in the hunt for a top four place and Herrera admitted that United came close to the complete display in a game that not many people thought they could win.
