O'Reilly is out at Fox but influence endures; career too?

"After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill O'Reilly have agreed that Bill O'Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel", the company said in a statement.

"It was a sad cocktail party story that women tell each other and shrug our shoulders and go, 'Ugh, another one, ' " Walsh told NPR earlier this month.

She says when she refused his request to go to his hotel room O'Reilly abused her and then told her she could forget about every appearing on his show.

Perino, who came on air to introduce the conservative network's now O'Reilly-free "The Factor", didn't take note of Huckabee's "kiss" comment.

Investors seemed to take the news in stride. With a profit center gone, 21st Century Fox stock fell nearly 1 percent Wednesday in heavy trading. "The market reaction to this is muted because there's a sense this won't be earth-shattering".

Embattled Fox News host Bill O'Reilly had a brief handshake with Pope Francis on Wednesday as sexual harassment allegations dog him at home. "It's a drop in the bucket for them", he says.

The U.S. Attorney's office in NY is investigating how 21st Century Fox handled the Roger Ailes scandal.

O'Reilly's show, "The O'Reilly Factor", is the top-rated show on Fox News.

Besides being able to win back some of those advertisers, which range from Mercedes-Benz to Coldwell Banker, an O'Reilly-free Fox could improve its chances of finally taking over British cable giant Sky.

After all, it's not like this was the company's first experience with the issue.

But just 18 days after disclosures of sexual harassment complaints and settlements by multiple women, he was sacked.

O'Reilly said in an April 1 statement that he had been unfairly targeted because of his public prominence. His departure is a significant blow to the Fox News lineup, which dominated the prime-time cable news ratings.

In a letter to the staff Wednesday, Rupert Murdoch and his sons, James and Lachlan, the top executives at 21st Century Fox, avoided any mention of O'Reilly's transgressions and praised him as "one of the most accomplished TV personalities in the history of cable news".

Of course, plenty of women have complained in the past, in companies and organizations, to no avail.

"I thought he was a good contributor", he said.

Perino closed Wednesday's show saying: "It is the end of an era here at Fox News Channel".

It started with a damning front page investigation by the New York Times.

The report of the latest claim prompted a statement from Marc E. Kasowitz, an attorney for O'Reilly, who said his client is being targeted by liberal groups who are out to "destroy" him. "It's really empowering for women in the newsroom".

Others figure that O'Reilly's firing won't be a sticking point for most Fox viewers. "A crime is a crime". Similarly, Ailes' fate at Fox was sealed when one of the network's most respected stars, Kelly, came forward.

The claims against O'Reilly, 67, added fuel to a crisis that began last summer when former anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against the network's former executive, Roger Ailes, whom she alleged damaged her career after she spurned his sexual advances.
