Pence visits USS Ronald Reagan carrier in Japan

Vice-President Mike Pence has warned North Korea not to test USA military might by pursuing its nuclear weapons programme, citing recent strikes in Syria and Afghanistan as proof of American "strength and resolve".

Mr. Pence visited a military base near the DMZ, Camp Bonifas, for a briefing with military leaders and to meet with American troops stationed there.

Pence said he had spoken with Trump and by 2020 some 60 percent of the US naval fleet would be in the region and Japan's role would grow.

A State Department official said Monday that the United States will continue trying to further isolate North Korea economically, politically and diplomatically.

North Korea's nuclear and missile development dominated the agenda on his first stop in South Korea.

One of the most common refrains from Trump, Pence and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been "the era of strategic patience is over", referring to what was essentially a wait-and-see tactic to dealing with Pyongyang but is notoriously vague, says Neill.

"The enemies of our freedom and this alliance would do well not to test the resolve of this president or the capabilities of the armed forces of the United States of America and our allies", Pence said. "And we are heartened by some initial steps that China has taken in this regard, but we look for them to do more".

Degrading North Korea's missile capability via hacking is a tactic that is actively being pursued by the U.S. military, according to public statements and congressional testimony by current and former members of the armed forces.

Pence said the USA trade deficit has more than doubled in the five years since the U.S.

Mr. McMaster cited Mr. Trump's recent decision to order missile strikes in Syria after a chemical attack blamed on the Assad government as a sign that the President "is clearly comfortable making tough decisions". But at the same time, McMaster said on "This Week" on ABC that "it's time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully".

On Sunday, as part of celebrations to mark the birthday of late North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, state television aired a concert which included a video showing the U.S. engulfed in flames.

At the outset of their meeting, Pence reiterated to Abe his statement in South Korea that the United States has run out of patience with Pyongyang's moves.

The vice president earlier visited a military installation near the DMZ, Camp Bonifas, for a briefing with military leaders at the joint U.S.

The Vice President of the United States Mike Pence, now on a 10-day long tour of Asia, arrived at the second stop of his tour as he landed in Tokyo on Thursday.

Speaking to US and Japanese troops on board the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier Wednesday, he called North Korea the most urgent and unsafe threat to the peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region. He says the Trump administration's plans to simplify the USA tax code and cut the corporate tax rate will "benefit every business represented here today".

The US trade deficit with South Korea in 2016 amounted to $27.6 billion.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence. The adviser spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the administration's initial understanding of the launch. "The time has really come for North Korea to get the message". "We better see that start happening pretty quickly here", Townsend said.
