As usual, the greatest export of North Korea is belligerent, militant bluster. The Japanese leader called for a peaceful resolution to the North Korea tensions but did not rule out the need for tough measures.

National Security Advisor HR McMaster also commented that "all of our options are on the table" to deter North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.

South Korean presidential candidates clashed on Wednesday night in a debate over the planned deployment in South Korea of a US -supplied Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system, which has angered China.

"We are closely watching the situation and will not be letting our guards down", Lee said.

The Trump administration has signaled a more forceful US stance toward North Korea's recent missile tests and threats, including a warning from Trump that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has "gotta behave".

How do we have so much intelligence, but we still haven't been able to weasel our way into North Korea quietly to pick off Kim Jong-un? None of the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, suggested alarm or signaled that they knew the precise reason for such Chinese activity.

"I think it's important that North Korea knows we're not trying to pick a fight, so don't try and give us one", she said.

"When we requested to restore the agreed language that was of political importance and expressed commitment to continue to work on the draft with the penholder, the USA delegation without providing any explanations cancelled the work on the draft claiming that is was Russia who had "blocked" the statement", a Russian diplomat told CBS News. "We feel very gratified about this".

North Korea declared itself a nuclear power in 2005.

"In some ways South Korea would love to see us stand up to North Korea" because of that, he said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un claimed to be having an upper-hand in the country's stained relationship with US when a video simulation of a North Korean nuclear missile attack was featured destroying what appears to be an unidentified American city.

Why are we, on the far side of the Pacific, still responsible for containing North Korea when two of its neighbors - Russian Federation and China - are nuclear powers and South Korea and Japan could field nuclear and conventional forces far superior to Kim's?

Tensions have escalated over North Korean moves to accelerate its arms programs, including developing an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the United States and announcing that a declared priority is to develop a hydrogen bomb. The U.S., which backed South Korea in the war, maintains about 28,500 servicemembers on the peninsula.

The US Navy's Carl Vinson strike group - consisting of an aircraft carrier and other warships - is on its way to the Western Pacific, Pacific Command said on Tuesday, following an order from President Donald Trump last week. It blew up nearly immediately.

The term "reckless" is one the North Koreans have used to describe continuing large-scale US and South Korean military exercises, which the North calls a dress rehearsal for an invasion.

There is concern the North will use the next big day on its calendar, April 25, to show off its strength.
