Watch Aretha Franklin Honor Clive Davis After Doc Premiere

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, based on Davis' 2013 bestselling autobiography and made in conjunction with The IM Global and Scott Free Productions, will premiere tonight (April 19) at the opening of the Tribeca Film Festival at Radio City Music Hall.

The Tribeca Film Festival kicked off Wednesday with a star-studded salute to Clive Davis at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

"Franklin brought the tribute to a thrilling close with a touching version of "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and the Davis-aided hit "Freeway of Love" that revved up her career again in the '80s.

Hudson then took the stage, singing a soulful rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" followed by a tribute to the late Houston, whom Davis treated like a daughter, as depicted in the doc. In addition to footage of Houston's first television appearance, a 1985 performance on The Merv Griffin Show, The Soundtrack of My Life includes an early demo of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" that Davis says in the film would have been fine for an artist like Olivia Newton-John.

"All of them fresh from not performing at the inauguration", Robert De Niro, who co-founded the festival, said before the film began, earning laughs and handclaps from the audience.

Franklin spoke briefly about her long working relationship with Davis, saying, "What a wonderful, caring, caring humanitarian".

The 123-minute Chris Perkel-directed doc takes viewers on a musical journey through Davis' career. But for the most part, the movie offers a warm and rosy picture of the longtime head of Columbia and Arista records, who is portrayed as a devoted music fan, a dedicated family man, a savvy business person and a trusted guardian angel for artists. He even had a large role in shaping the careers of Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin and Billy Joel.

"Apple is a global innovator that has revolutionized the distribution of music", said Davis in a statement.
