Thousands of people in US rally against Trump, for workers

Thousands of people from New England to the Midwest to the West Coast chanted, picketed and protested Monday as demonstrations raged against President Donald Trump's immigration policies along with the traditional May Day marching in favor of labor. The protesters, carrying American flags and signs reading "Love not hate, " marched about two miles to City Hall, where several elected officials spoke.

Zakiya Scott, one of the organisers, told Xinhua that the May Day demonstration was the culmination of a series of protests starting from early April by a newly formed umbrella organisation called the Majority coordinating more than 50 protest groups across some 100 U.S. cities. The event in 2006 became a USA rallying point for immigrants, with more than 1 million people marching against a proposed immigration enforcement bill.

"It's really a day that is going to be focused on immigrant rights and workers' rights", Kica Matos, a spokeswoman for the Fair Immigration Reform Movement, said.

"The election of Donald Trump is a challenge to all of us, whether we will stand up and speak up for our values", said US Senator Dick Durbin of IL, a Democrat.

Rallies are being held Monday in at least 200 US cities in 41 states in the United States in solidarity with the worldwide communist community.

One union, UNITE HERE, was itself responsible for turning out some 30,000 members at May Day marches across the country yesterday. My heart has sunk many times, after hearing that Trump's low ratings and the regrets of those who voted for him usually don't relate to his terrible actions on immigration. Twelve people were arrested for civil disobedience, according to Jose Lopez of the immigrant advocacy group Make the Road, after protesters blocked the entrance to JPMorgan Chase & Co for around 10 minutes.

In keeping with theme, many of those in attendance came from trade unions and immigrants' rights groups. like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46, GABRIELA Seattle, the Service Employees International Union Northwest 1199, El Comite and the Washington Federation of State Employees.

When I think of arguments that center immigrants' labor first and foremost, I often think of the sisters and brothers at the organization Living Hope in Houston, Texas. Activist Joey Gibson said he and other conservatives would travel to Seattle to defend against what he described as communist and anti-fascist groups who have in the past faced off with police in the evening, after the conclusion of the usually peaceful daytime marches.

Chiu promised the crowd that he would combat Trump's hateful policies through the power of California's legislation.

A May Day rally in San Francisco is under way with people blocking vehicle access at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office in downtown.

We have our work cut out for us. The government has arrested thousands of immigrants in the country illegally and threatened to withhold funding from jurisdictions that limit co-operation between local and federal immigration authorities. We came to this country.

In a nod to a failed ad campaign by Pepsi featuring supermodel Kendall Jenner walking through a street protest and handing a can of Pepsi to a police officer, some Portland marchers threw cans of soda at police.

Tens of thousands of immigrants and their allies are expected to rally Monday in cities such as New York, Chicago, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Protests in Washington, Homestead and Miami were part of more than 200 events in more than 200 communities in more than 40 states, Durand said. "That is what we re organizing against", said Barbara Ransby, a professor at the University of IL.

Activists said they were seeking to amass the largest crowds to have yet turned out for USA immigrant rights demonstrations since Trump took office on January 20.

In cities large and small, the protests intensified throughout the day.

In Turkey, police used tear gas against protesters attempting to march to Istanbul's Taksim Square, where demonstrations were prohibited, AFP reports.
