The weather service said it received reports of more than two dozen tornado sightings Tuesday night across the five states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Wisconsin. A tornado killed a man in Wisconsin.

"There is definitely the potential for all the severe weather hazards", including tornadoes and hail, Hultquist said.

Severe storms, plus more tornadoes, are expected in Texas on Thursday.

In northern Wisconsin, state emergency management officials are concerned about flooding in Ashland, Trempealeau, Clark and Jackson counties.

At least one person has been killed by a tornado that roared through a portion of a western Oklahoma town.

The south side of Elk City was hit hardest by one storm, said Mayor Bill Helton.

A mobile home is a particularly unsafe place to be during a tornado, according to the National Weather Service. No details were immediately available about the person who was hurt there.

Assessment crews were headed out Wednesday to determine the extent of the damage.

The severe weather also caused extensive damage to several turkey barns across from the mobile home park.

National Weather Service meteorologist Rick Smith says two supercells began in the Texas Panhandle on Tuesday then moved into Oklahoma. The storm struck a subdivision Tuesday just south of Elk City, Okla., about 110 miles west of Oklahoma City.

Danny Ringer, chaplain with the Elk City Fire Department, says that tornado killed 53-year-old Bo Mikles. Authorities said it appears he was fleeing his home when his vehicle was thrown several hundred feet.

It's expected the storms will reach western Oklahoma Tuesday night and may move into eastern Oklahoma.

The twister struck at a trailer park along US 53 in the Barron County town of Prairie Lake, about midway between Chetek and Cameron.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army are assisting those who lost their homes.

The National Weather Service said spotters reported a tornado four miles northwest of Chetek at 5:35 p.m., and another five miles west-southwest of Weyerhaeuser at 6:15 p.m.

In Iowa, the storms damaged homes and other buildings and knocked down trees, limbs and power poles, leaving thousands of people without power. The tornado swept into the mobile home park in western Wisconsin on Tuesday, as a storm system also pounded parts of at least seven states from Texas to near the Canadian border with heavy rain, high winds and hail.

Chetek is about 110 miles (177 kilometers) northeast of Minneapolis/St. Paul, and about 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of Eau Claire.

Fitzgerald described the scene to KMSP-TV as "total devastation" and said first responders could hear people yelling for help when they arrived.
