Boston Celtics win NBA draft lottery, Lakers second

The Boston Celtics get to pick first in the NBA Draft this year.

Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck smiles after the learning the Celtics were awarded the No. 1 pick in the NBA basketball draft, at the draft lottery Tuesday, May 16, 2017, in NY. "Obviously, we would've loved to be in the top two or three, but it was what I expected", Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough said.

The Celtics obtained the pick from the Nets in 2013 and had a 25 percent of getting the top pick.

The timing was flawless for the Celtics, as Brooklyn finished with the worst record in the league.

When the Celtics traded Garnett and Pierce after the duo played six seasons together and won the National Basketball Association title in 2008, they began a rebuild.

While it wasn't the ideal scenario for Philadelphia, they still come out with a top 3 pick to add to Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and the rest of the young Sixers core.

The Nets went the opposite way.

"It's three or four guys going and one guy coming back", Grousbeck said.

The Celtics, after an impressive run of playoff appearances (and a championship in 2008), were looking to the future while the Nets were seeking to make an immediate splash in their new Brooklyn home. "With a team like that, the defending champions, you can't let them hit first". So basically when because the 76ers' logo was drawn first, they acquired the first pick and so on.

Kelly Olynyk, the hero of Game 7 against Washington with 26 points, was held scoreless in the opener against Cleveland until Boston's last shot of the game. "There's a lot of good feelings around the Celtics right now". "We won five in a row and everybody thought we were insane". Boston's going to take Markelle Fultz, he's a good player. Isaiah Thomas, who averaged 27 points in the series against Washington, finished with 17 on 7-for-19 shooting. Over the next several weeks the Lakers will be working tirelessly to presumably pick a top choice and a second choice on their draft board in case Boston selects their primary choice.

On the other hand, the Celtics are headed to the Eastern Conference Finals and secured the No. 1 overall pick via this year's draft lottery on Tuesday night. The Sixers could just swap picks with another team that has a top-five draft pick, draft someone like Malik Monk, and acquire another player from the trade.

Phoenix get the fourth pick while the Sacramento Kings round out the top 5.

Ultimately, Tuesday night was a big win for the Lakers' rebuild. "There really was no way to walk out of here disappointed given the possible outcomes we faced".
