Bulgaria's Kristian Kostov 2nd in Eurovision Song Contest

The 27-year-old singer performed a heartfelt rendition of "Amar Pelos Dios" - a song performed entirely in Portuguese - which was composed by his sister Luisa Sobral.

"We live in a world of disposable music, fast food music without content and I think this can be a victory for music that means something", he said.

United Kingdom entrant Lucie Jones came 15th with I'll Never Give Up On You, claiming 111 points.

He was within reach of Portugal, 104 points down after the jury vote, but although he could not claw back the lead with televoters, he registered Bulgaria's best-ever finish.

It is a considerable improvement for the United Kingdom, after last year's entrants Joe and Jake came 24th with 62 points. His song became one of the favorites following the first semifinal. The union, however, was criticised for not banning 1944 past year, allowing Russia-Ukraine tensions to fester. For the first time in years the Grand Final featured practically no Balkan representatives and no performers from the Baltic States.

There was some controversy during a mid-show performance by last year's victor, Jamala of Ukraine, when a man draped in an Australian flag jumped on stage beside her and bared his bottom to the audience before a security guard dragged him off the stage. Jamala continued to sing "unfazed", the broadcaster 1+1 TV said.

The incident forced BBC commentator Graham Norton to apologise to United Kingdom viewers at home, telling them: "It's been brought to our attention that you may have witnessed a bare bottom earlier in this performance".
