Mercedes-Benz to bring batteries to the United States

While it's true the US solar market has been buffeted recently by some companies' extraordinarily public exits through bankruptcies, it is still attracting heavyweight companies to join it speaks volumes about how its fundamentals are viewed around the world.

The two companies will introduce a joint offering that will provide customers with Mercedes-Benz batteries coupled with Vivint Solar's solar energy systems.

Tesla may have been the first to try its hand at home energy storage in the US, but Mercedes-Benz is on deck. Mercedes has taken the battery technology used in its electric cars and adapted it for solar storage in the home. "With batteries featuring the best in automotive engineering from Mercedes-Benz, and high-quality solar energy systems from Vivint Solar, our solution allows customers to take the next step toward a sustainable energy future".

Solar and energy storage prices are highly dependent on your market (electricity cost, gov incentives, etc.) and your property.

They released the picture seen above of a home with both a Vivint solar installation and a Mercedes home battery pack. One cool thing about these batteries is that they're modular - each individual weighs in at 2.5kWh, and they can be combined to create systems up to 20kWh. The company has done surveys and research to gauge what customers want, and they want smart energy consumption systems and solar storage, he said.

Mercedes has been selling the batteries in Europe and South Africa this year, but its partnership with Vivint, announced Thursday, represents its entrance into the US market. But in many other states, potential customers may be driven more by emotion - like feeling environmentally responsible or self-sufficient - than by cost savings. "We look forward to bringing this innovative solution to consumers, beginning in our California markets". In addition to being able to purchase a solar energy system outright, customers may benefit from Vivint Solar's affordable, flexible financing options or power purchase agreements.

Musk made that much clear at his initial solar-roof unveiling, where he discussed how a solar push would allow for the full integration of Tesla products: a Powerwall that both stores solar energy and juices up your Tesla electric auto.

Tesla is going this route through its Tesla Energy unit and SolarCity subsidiary.

Parent company Daimler started the energy storage division in 2015 soon after Tesla Energy was launched.

Daimler unveiled its Mercedes-branded home battery pack previous year, but this new deal with Vivint will enable them to distribute it more widely in the US. The smallest, one module, will store 2.5 kilowatt hours of energy, and the modules can be stacked to store up to 20 kilowatt hours. It will only be on sale through Vivint Solar in Q2, with no word on when the batteries will be available in other states. Apart from the EQ brand with a family of vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is also developing a holistic ecosystem, which, alongside the vehicle itself, also comprises a comprehensive range of electric mobility-related offerings.

Vivint Solar is a company that deals in solar power setups so it's going to sell customers the required panels as well.
