ET spoke to Cornell in April at the Los Angeles premiere of The Promise, where he shared that Soundgarden was working on a new album. He began Soundgarden back in 1984 with guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and went on to help create Audioslave with members from Rage Against The Machine, as well as the supergroup Temple of the Dog, which featured frontman Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. He was 52. Soundgarden was the scheduled headliner for Pointfest on Saturday in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

Saturday's lineup also included Stone Sour, Pierce the Veil, Greek Fire, J Roddy Walston & the Business, Biffy Clyro, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Hush List and Monster Eats Manhattan.

The group hit its commercial peak with its breakout album, "Superunknown", in 1994, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for best rock album.

Cornell had been on tour in Detroit at the time of his death.

The Detroit police media relations director, Michael Woody, told The Detroit Free Press that, "Based on our observations at the scene, we are investigating it as a possible suicide", adding that, "We're not saying specifically why".

Hours before he was pronounced dead, Cornell actually performed with Soundgarden in Detroit, where he was reportedly in high spirits and even mentioned "the next place we play" to the audience. She expects some information to be released about the results later in the day.

Cornell teamed up with Aldean for a collaboration at the 2014 CMT Artists of the Year ceremony to perform Aldean's "Just Gettin' Started", which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart when it was released as the second single from Aldean's 2014 album Old Boots, New Dirt.

"At 12 am (local time), we received a 911 call from the MGM Grand Casino Hotel". The medical examiner determined Cornell committed suicide by hanging.

He said Cornell wife and family were shocked by it. The friend then forced their way into the hotel room, where he discovered Cornell's body on the floor.

Cornell, 52, was in Detroit performing with Soundgarden, which had embarked on a US tour in April, CNN reports. He said the family would work closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. Furthermore, Cornell's representative, one Brian Bumbery, said that the singer's death was "sudden and unexpected".
