But Jurgen Klopp's side took a massive step to returning to the Champions League as they eased to a 4-0 win which leaves Arsenal requiring snookers to crash the top four.

But the Gunners went on to win the match 4-1 as Chilean worldwide Alexis Sanchez and Giroud scored in the 69th and 80th minute respectively to give Arsene Wenger a cheerful victory at the Bet365 Stadium.

If Manchester City or Liverpool do slip up and drop points in their final games they're both five and four goals ahead on goal difference, so we really need to hammer a few home tonight, if even the smallest of miracles were to come true.

Arsene Wenger refused to criticise West Ham for their feeble performance against Liverpool which looks set to cost Arsenal a place in the Champions League next season.

Just to be clear, I have no idea whether Arsene Wenger plans to stick around as manager of Arsenal next year.

"I answered for 20 years the question, "the top four is nothing special".

"With him, I feel he had something still left, but once he's on the pitch and gets the ball, he always becomes a devil and forgets his pain", Wenger said in the press conference after revealing that he only chose to play the Chilean at 4pm on Tuesday (16 May).

"We have 72 points now and we have to focus to get to 75".

"Sunderland fought and you want that in the Premier League - that's what you want from every team", the Frenchman added.

And Wenger was delighted that his team were able to close the gap in front of their own supporters.

They will be back in the Champions League next season and Wenger believes they face a battle to defend the trophy.

The Gunners dominated for large periods of the game, but struggled to get past the outstanding Jordan Pickford in the Sunderland goal.

"We had plenty of shots on goal, but we needed to be patient", Wenger said. "Once he gets the ball on the pitch he becomes a devil and forgets the pain". "I just think that if we finish outside the top four, it will maybe be down to one point".

"We set up to try to make it hard for Arsenal and for long periods I thought we did that".
