Walter Mazzarri speaks out following shock Watford sacking: I reached my target

Watford have confirmed another season in the Premier League and this team can finally get some credit since with the squad they have available to them, this has been a really good performance for the Hornets.

Walter Mazzarri has defended his reign as Watford head coach and taken a parting shot at the club by saying they did not match his ambitions.

Mazzarri is 11 months into his three-year deal at the club.

He has been linked with a move away from the KCOM Stadium and is expected to announce a decision on his future after City finish the season at home to second-placed Tottenham on Sunday.

"We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year".

Among the British bookmakers' favorites to take over from Mazzarri are Hull manager Marco Silva, whose team has just been relegated from the Premier League, and Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked by Leicester in February less than a year after guiding the unheralded team to the Premier League title. We started to talk during this week and we'll meet again next week.

"For someone that always wants more I always have the image in my head of when we were seventh and we beat Everton", Mazzarri said.

"Watford were able to face down sides that were technically far superior to us because we did important tactical work and were organised".

Mazzarri was criticised for using a translator throughout his stay at Watford, but he replied: "The English language proved to be very hard".

"I worked 15 hours a day, every day and I'm exhausted".

Such barbs are all the more ironic given some of the quality of football served up by Mazzarri's Watford this season, including some horrendously unambitious 4-1-4-1 set-ups from the Italian. "If nothing came up that interested me, I wouldn't mind having some time off". Now I would like to go to Spain, Portugal or any other destination that motivates me. I needed new challenges. I like getting to know a new league.
