Birdies lift Paul Casey after rough patch at US Open

Birdies lift Paul Casey after rough patch at US Open

McIlroy, as well as Day, will play the Travelers Championship near Hartford, Conn., next week as he gears up for the British Open. His seven-under-par tied the record to par for the first round of a US Open held by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf, who each shot seven-under 63 at Baltusrol in 1980.

"Just to see their games and how they play, I've grown up watching them. If we can't hit it within that avenue, you might as well pack your bags and go home".

But three costly bogeys on the back nine left Johnson needing to pick up strokes down the stretch which proved beyond him.

Day, however, came to the U.S. Open off of a second and a tie for 15th in his last two starts. -Day after missing the cut.

A day after Rickie Fowler's seven-under opening round, that same score is still leading, but it's shared by four players, not including Fowler, who shot a one-over 73 to sit one back.

McIlroy took four of them, including a near ace on the finishing par-three ninth, to finish the tournament on five under, which will miss the cut by two or three shots.

Friday wasn't almost as favorable for the world's three-top ranked players, none of whom will move onto the weekend.

The story of the day though was Casey's recovery after racking-up an eight on the par-five-14 and following it up with a bogey on the 16.

Defending champion Johnson will aim to bounce back from a lacklustre 3-over-par 75 when he tees off alongside Jordan Spieth and Martin Kaymer in the afternoon session. I made a great up-and-down on two and I had two great shots for birdie.

That increased the likelihood of a seventh successive major producing a first-time victor, although the likes of Masters champion Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer - who claimed U.S. Open glory in 2014 - were handily placed four off the pace.

Speaking about the changes he made a year ago, Fleetwood added: "I went back to my old coach and had one of my best mates caddying and I think that can't be underestimated, having your friend with you, whether you're leading the US Open or playing a casual round at home".

Day, at 10 over, said, "I mean, the scores were out there".

McIlroy however, who is returning from a hip and back injury, put a courageous face on his second consecutive missed cut at a US Open following his exit at the halfway stage in 2016.

"I had been swinging it well and it felt really, really good a couple holes later to be picking the ball out of the hole for a birdie".

"If we get rain tomorrow and it gets wet and it plays soft, this place is going to get soft and you're going to have to be aggressive and you have to make a ton of birdies", Snedeker said.

"Not every day you enjoy a round of golf with an eight on the card, but I'm a pretty happy man", said Casey afterwards. But under sunny skies on Thursday, Erin Hills looked more friend than foe with 44 golfers breaking par to set a record for the opening round of a U.S. Open.

"I think with everything so large, your target is larger and your misses get even more extreme".

Kim won The Players Championship in May for his second PGA Tour title.
