Bogaerts hits 2 homers to lead Red Sox over Astros 6-5

The Astros won a lopsided game on Saturday, but Friday night and last night were close, playoff-type games in which the Red Sox got the big hits and the big outs when they needed them.

An inning later, catcher Christian Vazquez caught Houston's Derek Fisher stealing to end the game.

Bogaerts had just two homers entering Sunday's game.

Trailing 6-4 with Correa and Jose Altuve in scoring position in the eighth inning, Carlos Beltran drove home Correa with a single to left only for Altuve to be thrown out at the plate on a ideal toss from Andrew Benintendi. "But I feel like the American League this year has a lot of shortstops playing a lot of good baseball".

Mike Fiers allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.

Technically, the Yankees still have a better winning percentage, but it's by less than two-tenths of a point - the Sox are 39-30, with one more win but also one more loss than NY - and so the standings show a tie for first place in the AL East.

Rays 3, Tigers 2: Chris Archer pitched six strong innings, Daniel Robertson drove in two runs and scored a third, and Tampa Bay beat Detroit.

James Hoyt plunked Mookie Betts in the right knee with one out in the seventh before hitting Dustin Pedroia in the back with a pitch. Both managers came onto the field as Pedroia continue to scream and pointed at the mound before calming down and heading to first base.

With a chance to grab a share of first place in the AL East for the first time since April 18, the Red Sox edged the Astros 6-5 here on Sunday night. Marwin Gonzalez will play third base and hit second against Rick Porcello on Saturday.

Houston manager A.J. Hinch said it was an aggressive send to wave Springer, who was easily tagged out at home in the sixth. Despite the loss, Boston's bullpen stretched its scoreless streak to 26 frames - the longest such run in the majors this season.

Altuve led off the third with his homer off the train tracks above the left-center field facade, and Beltran followed three batters later with his ninth home run of the season to put Houston ahead 6-0.

PADRES 7, BREWERS 5 (11) Cory Spangenberg and Chase d'Arnaud each hit solo home runs in the 11th inning, lifting San Diego over host Milwaukee in yet another slugfest. Keuchel has been on the 10-day disabled list since June 5 with neck discomfort; McCullers since June 9 with lower back discomfort. Musgrove is only 2-5 with a 5.05 ERA at home in 2017 entering his first start against Boston - a far cry from the 3-1 record and 1.75 ERA he posted at Minute Maid Park in six late-season games (five starts) past year.

The Houston Astros could not solve the riddle of the Boston Red Sox's bullpen in a series-opening loss, so they promptly made it a non-issue the very next night by roughing up the reigning American League Cy Young Award victor. Brad Peacock (3-1 3.00) will start in the series opener against the Athletics. He allowed two hits and one run while striking out a season-high 10 in 4 2/3 innings in his last start.
