Favourites Portugal, Germany look to get off to flying start in Russian Federation

Federation Internationale de Football Association is trialing the use of video assistants and wants them to be used at next year's World Cup in Russia.

Eight teams will compete in men's worldwide soccer's tournament of champions, which also doubles as a teaser to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. New Zealand is at the bottom of the group with no points.

THE Confederations Cup is underway and one of the favourites are set to get their campaign up and running in European Champions Portugal.

The Confederations Cup will also demonstrate whether fans from all countries can enjoy themselves in the Russian summer or will social problems mar the tournament? "He is taking this competition very seriously and is fully focused on training and on the match against Mexico". The familiar faces from their Euro victory, and even Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently won the UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid, have not been rested for this tournament. The pressure on the team is quite considerable in this scenario and it was clear from Portugal coach Fernando Santos' claim that the Confederations Cup "does not matter at all".

The match in Kazan will start at 1500 GMT and will be followed at 1800 GMT by the Group B opener between African champions Cameroon and Chile in Moscow.

Ronaldo played well and made the first goal but did not score.

But the Portugal captain created another shooting opportunity for Quaresma with 10 minutes remaining and, although Ochoa saved comfortably, they continued to pile late pressure on Mexico.

Ronaldo's recent performances have left him in a strong position to catch up with Lionel Messi with a fifth world player of the year award.

Portugal is making its debut in the Confederations Cup, while Mexico is playing in the intercontinental competition for the seventh time.

Mexico head into Sunday's clash having drawn 1-1 with the US in their latest World Cup qualifier, although prior to that they earned comfortable victories over Honduras in a qualifying game and Ireland in a friendly, winning 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. El Tri won this tournament on home soil back in 1999 but conditions could prove unfavourable conditions in Russian Federation. Portugal won 1-0 in a friendly in 2014. We played without confidence, couldn't connect two or three passes.

KAZAN - Portugal arrived in Russian Federation on Wednesday night, with just short of 100 fans turning up outside the team hotel to welcome the team and, in particular, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Defender Miguel Layun and midfielder Hector Herrera play for FC Porto, while forward Raul Jimenez plays for Benfica. "We played against a team at a high level".
