Hideki Matsuyama closes with 6-under 66 in US Open

His final 72-hole score of 16 under tied a record set by Rory McIlroy during the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

Hideki Matsuyama had the low round of the day at 6 under, to finish in a second-place tie with Brian Harman at 12 under.

Koepka, who finished at 16-under 272, became the seventh straight first-time victor of a major championship, and it was the first time since 1998-2000 that Americans won their national championship three straight years. Justin Thomas shot a record score of a nine-under par 63 in the third round on Saturday.

"That s probably one of the coolest things I ve ever experienced and to do it on Father s Day it s pretty neat", Koepka said afterwards.

"I'm satisfied with the way I played today and am happy to have placed this high, but two of the four days weren't good and I feel like I could have played better", said Matsuyama who powered a fairway wood onto the green on his second shot of the day, setting up a two-putt for an opening-hole birdie.

Koepka pulled away on the closing holes by making a hard save of par on the 13th hole, then sinking birdie putts on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes.

Harman made par on every hole on the front nine except three where he birdied. Smiles are rare at a U.S. Open when a player finishes before the leaders tee off.

The 19-year-old Henderson closed with a 66 on the Blythefield layout that was reduced to a par of 69 - the fifth hole was played as a par 3 instead of a par 5 - the final two rounds because of flooding.

However, Koepla did not flounder with a par on the 17th and on 18 to finish out the round. It was far from certain he would win a U.S. Open only three years after riding a fourth place in a U.S. Open, at Pinehurst in North Carolina in 2014, to his PGA Tour card.

University Texas product Scottie Scheffler is the low amateur for this year's Open. Everyone was giving me advice, telling me to keep doing what I'm doing.

Koepka said he received a phone call from last year's USA open champion Dustin Johnson last night. I mean, it was still, I mean, 12-under, 11-under was still leading the tournament at one back.

Rickie Fowler, urged on by the biggest galleries at Erin Hills, turned in a scrappy outward nine mixing two birdies with a bogey to sit three back of the leader.

"I felt on Saturday I played great". The Englishman has enjoyed a breakout season on both the European and PGA Tours this year, and this capped his status among the game's rising stars. And he said he was pulling for me and just hang in there. And I felt like I've put myself into contention so many times, and I don't want to say I got unlucky.

On Sunday, he added Erin Hills in Wisconsin to the list - the stop that made all those frequent flier miles worth it.

FORSYTH, Ill. (AP) - Thailand's Chorphaka Jaengkit won the Decatur-Forsyth Classic for her first Symetra Tour title, beating Tiffany Chan by a stroke. "I've just got to get on the greens and have that cup start to look a bit bigger".

"It was fun to ... be able to score, because typically at a U.S. Open, you get your head beat in", American Rickie Fowler said. "And I think this is hopefully major number one and there's many more to come".
