North Korea Warns ICBM Test 'Not Too Far Away' Now

The EU has steadily increased its sanctions against Kim Jong Un's North Korea, particularly in the last few months.

"This new-type cruise rocket is a powerful attack means capable of striking any enemy group of battleships" attempting to attack North Korea and can be used "at will", KCNA said.

North Korea fired four anti-ship missiles into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula Thursday, which the South Korean military said was meant to demonstrate its "precise targeting capability".

North Korea launched a volley of surface-to-ship cruise missiles off its east coast Thursday, Seoul's defence ministry said, the latest in an accelerating series of tests defying global pressure to rein in its weapons program.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea said Friday it has test-launched a new type of cruise missile capable of striking USA and South Korean warships "at will", as South Korea found a suspected North Korean drone near the tense border between the rivals.

Analyst Kim Dong-yub at Seoul's Institute for Far Eastern Studies said the projectiles, which showed longer range than North Korea's previously known KN-01 anti-ship cruise missiles, were likely from a new cruise missile system the North displayed during a massive April 15 military parade.

The latest round of missile launches came a day after South Korea's new president Moon Jae-in announced he was suspending the rollout of a THAAD, created to deter a missile attack from Pyongyang, which it is installing in collaboration with the U.S. Moon said he was delaying the further rollout of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile defense system until an environmental assessment is completed.

The event comes after North Korea last week released dramatic pictures of its latest "successful" ballistic missile test.

"We continue to call on the DPRK to refrain from what we consider to be provocative actions and destabilizing actions ... that only serves to undermine the situation in the Korean Peninsula", spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

The missiles reportedly flew some 200 km.

US ally South Korea said on Wednesday it would hold off on installing remaining elements of the THAAD system, which China strongly objects to, until the environmental study was completed.

According to earlier reports by the South Korean media, several anti-ship missiles were launched from the outskirts of the coastal city of Wonsan.

Kim has now conducted four missile tests since Moon was elected last month, complicating the new president's ambitions to engage with Pyongyang.

The tests came after South Korea's newly elected president, Moon Jae-in, suspended the installation of a us missile-defense system, an apparent concession to China and a significant break with the United States on policy toward North Korea.

Moon had also promised to review the deployment of the THAAD system in South Korea, a decision that was made by the government of his conservative predecessor, Park Geun-hye.

"North Korea claimed that it tested a miniaturized nuclear warhead in 2016".

"I would not say we are comfortably ahead of the threat".

This is the 11 missile test of the Kim Jong-un regime since Trump became US President, and the 5 since Moon became President of South Korea. On Wednesday, Moon's office said installation of four additional launchers would be halted until an assessment of the system's impact on the environment was completed.
