Portugal, Mexico meet early in Confederations Cup

Mexico striker Javier Hernandez cancelled out Quaresma's opener shortly before halftime and the two goals in an exciting last six minutes ensured the teams shared the points.

Cristiano Ronaldo's initial shot hit the crossbar then Pepe "scored" from the rebound in the 22nd minute.

Cedric's goal looked to have been the breakthrough Portugal needed, but Mexico did not cave in. We know we still have lots of opportunities, there are two games remaining and that's why we're calm.

It was Portugal that could have taken an early lead when Pepe scored off a free kick, but after VAR replay, the goal was overturned after it was clearly seen that four Portugal players were offsides, including Pepe.

The highly entertaining fixture saw Cristiano Ronaldo put through a sublime assist for Ricardo Quaresma who slotted home the opening goal in the 35th minute.

"I think that, when football people enjoy the way we play, especially against a team like the one we faced, it's very positive", he said.

"He is an example for us, the way he works, the way he plays", Patricio said.

Mexico controlled possession and spent more time in Portugal's area, but the Euro 2016 champions were a constant threat on the counterattack in front of 34,372 fans at the Kazan Arena.

Host Russia top the group with three points after defeating New Zealand 2-0 in the opening match on Saturday. Ronaldo magnificent pass found Quaresma, who is nobody to prevent to score into an empty net.

The overall result will be a positive one for Mexico as they showed a gull to battle back from being down a goal twice to tie that match both times.

A dramatic Group A game in Kazan that saw Hector Moreno head in an injury-time victor for Mexico also featured a goal by Nani disallowed for offside on review. Portuguese defender Bruno Alves won the game in injury time powering a header past Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. Minutes after coming on, he almost scored a great headed goal but Ochoa came up with a terrific save.

Portugal, who are making their debut at the Confederations Cup, go into the clash with Mexico on the back of a convincing 3-0 World Cup qualifying win away against Latvia.

Ronaldo has not spoken to the media in Kazan and his staff said it would not comment about the recent issues involving the player.
