Rep. Scalise's Condition Upgraded from Critical to Serious

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., remains in critical condition, hospital officials said this afternoon, after the House majority whip and three others were shot at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, Wednesday.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", the hospital said, adding that he had been downgraded to "serious" condition.

The names have not been disclosed, those listed had been briefed.

The person says investigators aren't sure of the significance of the names and it's not clear whether this was a list of people the attacker was targeting.

Scalise suffered a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

Mika will remain in the intensive care unit through at least the weekend, the family said.

According to the spokesperson, Scalise underwent another surgery on Saturday.

Scalise was sedated Friday, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.

The surgeon on Friday said he was "a lot more confident and optimistic" about Scalise's recovery than he was two days ago.

The gunman, identified by law enforcement officials as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against US President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.

All of the victims, including a Republican congressman whom doctors said narrowly escaped death, are expected to fully recover.
