Alleged shooter James Hodgkinson shot Rep. Steve Scalise and members of the Capitol police force in Alexandria, Virginia, during Republicans' early-morning practice ahead of a charity baseball game on June 14, 2017.

"When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

Scalise was shot in the hip and several others were wounded when Hodgkinson sprayed dozens of bullets onto a baseball field at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Va.

Hodgkinson, from IL, who had lashed out against USA president Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media, was killed by Mr Scalise's security detail and other police officers.

Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run".

MedStar also confirmed previous reports that Scalise is showing signs of improvement - being more responsive and speaking with loved ones - following surgery Saturday. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers".

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified". Scalise is recovering from "substantial damage" he sustained when a bullet pierced his left hip and traveled directly across to the other hip.

The man who opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing baseball had angrily railed against President Donald Trump the day before the shooting. He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged.

The 51-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana underwent another surgery on Saturday, the hospital treating him said, which was at least his third operation since being transported to the facility. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media. It includes photos of Scalise and his family.

He remained in critical condition on Thursday, CBS News reported.

Also suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.
