Trump says he is under investigation, his lawyer clarifies he isn't

President Donald Trump's transition team has been ordered to preserve materials related to ongoing investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, the New York Times reported on Friday, as Trump again assailed the probes.

If Rosenstein were to recuse himself, Brand - who other than Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Session is the only other Senate-confirmed official in the entire agency at the moment - would take over his responsibilities.

The Washington Post on Wednesday reported that Mueller is investigating the Republican president for possible obstruction of justice.

Rosenstein, who has only been on the job about six weeks, has privately told people at the Justice Department that he may need to step aside from his role supervising the special counsel investigation, according to officials familiar with the conversations. Sessions learned of the Mueller appointment at about the same time that the press was told, according to people briefed on the matter.

Recent news reports have suggested Mr Trump sought all three officials' help in pressuring Mr Comey to drop his investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn.

A Trump confidant said this week the president had considered firing Mueller.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he asked.

While aides have advised Trump to stay off Twitter, the president continued to weigh in on the widening legal investigations Sunday. White House officials had no case ready for the dismissal of Comey and received heavy criticism for the conflicting explanations about his departure.

Donald Trump, for your refusal to stop digging yourself into a hole, you had the Worst Week in Washington.
