Ward vs Kovalev 3? Sergey should leave Andre alone, for now

Last November's title fight between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev was one of the most controversial in boxing past year.

The Las Vegas fight ended with Kovalev was in the corner and Ward landing shots to the body. While still grimacing from the gut shot, Kovalev tried in vain to keep Ward away, but "SOG" drilled the former world champion with a murderous right to the jaw, a punch that would have flattened a lesser man. Kovalev (30-2, 25 KOs) stumbled around on rubbery legs as Ward gave chase. "When I saw him reacting to the body shots that were borderline I knew I had him", Ward said.

WBO, WBA and IBF light heavyweight champion Andre "S.O.G".

After the fight, Main Events CEO Kathy Duva, who promotes Kovalev, said she will file a protest with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, claiming Ward landed several low blows without being penalized.?

"He's really lucky, 'Son of Judges, ' " Kovalev said of Ward, twisting Ward's "Son of God" nickname.

"I don't know, I can't explain it", Kovalev said.

But first Bivol (10-0, eight knockouts) needs to take care of business against Agnew (29-2, 15 KOs), who was knocked out by Kovalev in 2014.

Still, for a fighter who spent most of his career at super-middleweight, Parker would provide a tough test. "Kovalev fought a good fight but once I compute a fighter in my brain and have him in there, I know what I need to do the next time around". I was better and he was better this fight. Back in July 2015, he retained his titles by knockout over Nadjib Mohammedi in the third round. [Ward] punched me low blow already a few times during the fight.

Bennett said on HBO the outcome could be revisited, and if it turns out the punch was delivered after the bell, the result could even be changed to a Rigondeaux disqualification.

'Kovalev also was probably up in the fight, at least by a little bit. "These are two elite fighters in their prime, and I implore you to tell their story. The fight should have continued". It's an interesting development with the two power punching terrors of the sport in their last couple bouts: Opponents have proven that if you take the fight to Kovalev and Gennady Golovkin at tactical intervals, they suddenly aren't quite so fearsome.

Which is what Kovalev was in the second half of their fight seven months ago at T-Mobile Arena, when Ward rallied.

The fight will be televised on HBO pay-per-view, which has some in boxing scratching their heads.

Ward could pursue lineal light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, who owns the fourth sanctioning body belt, but there are promotional and television network issues there, so don't count on seeing it.

If Ward does decide to bypass cruiserweight, which would make financial sense, there is a much better option for him up at heavyweight. But the fight is going to happen, so it's time to report on what we are hopeful doesn't turn out to be the ridiculously one-sided bout most are predicting.
